When this little on is born less than two months later will be my 21st. I
have some worries about this, I intend to breastfeed, if i *do* drink will
it effect the baby in some way?... also if we do the family dinner thing, do
you think it would be okay to take the baby, as i think it would be too hard
to get someone to watch him because of breastfeeding, young age, etc.

any thoughts??

Thanks,
Leanne.

I don't see a problem with a glass of wine or beer or something on special
occasions, but I would never go out and get drunk while breastfeeding.  Why
don't you hold off and do your major celebrating when your baby is weaned.
I brought Julia with me everywhere I went, family dinners, restaurants, etc.
I'm sure your family would love for your baby to be there!

Even if you were to get totally smashed, which I assume you wouldn't, the
level of alcohol in your milk is only equal to that of your blood - .05,
etc.  This is much less than the alcohol content of some baby medicines!
My only warning would be that you not co-sleep while drinking.
Come over to misc.kids.breastfeeding for any breastfeeding advice in the
future.
As for dinner - go out!  Your baby will be fine sitting or sleeping in
someone's lap (or in a sling).  They're so portable at that age . . much
more so than once they start toddling.

If you're worried about it, could you express a little extra beforehand and
store it so you don't have to b/f the day after, and after that the alcohol
should be out of your system.

Not likely, unless you plan to get smashed ;-)
In which case, you can pump and dump for half a day.
I don't see why taking the baby would be an issue, either.

Just pump and dump for the booze.  As for dinner...

When Birdie Sue was seven days old, we went to San Francisco Steak House to
celebrate with friends and family.  You had a baby, not a sentence of house
arrest. :)  Take the pumpkin with you (and spare diapers and an extra shirt
for you, in case of accidents) and have a good time!

When my nephew was nursing my SIL turned 21.  She had 1 drink from a
restaurant and the baby never nursed again.  She tried several times because
the engorgement killed her after stopping BF almost every feeding to none at
all.  I dont know if this is common but I dont know if I would want to risk
it.
