Rachel's spitting up got a lot better when we started solids twice a day and
were doing a lot of cereal. That constipated her so we are doing less cereal
and more fruit and some veggies. This still seems to cause her to strain and
cry, so we do prunes regularly. She loves prunes and they do the trick.
But, she is going on 7 months old and still spits up now, a lot. I am still
breastfeeding but honestly wondering if I should try weaning. I planned to
go for the whole year. But so help me, I do won der if it something I am
ingesting that is making her worse. I try and stay away from all meds but my
migraines are coming back. I was told triptans as needed and occasionally,
were safe. I use Relpax.....but two times, I have taken my Relpax and then
Rachel has spit up soon afterwards and it seems to send her on a spiral of
spitting up worse for a few *days*. I am now scared to use Relpax, and this
puts me in migraine jeopardy- a triptan is the only thing that offers me
good relief. I take in conjunction with Anaprox or a narcotic, but I HAVE to
have the triptan to get good relief- I can skip the narcotic etc. My
migraines are coming back to be pretty frequent. If I think I am going to
need my meds, I am thinking of weaning as bad as I hate to, because I think
also that Rachel spits up a lot of breastmilk still.
I hate this! Any comments? Please none about weaning, just about meds and/or
the spitting up etc............my question is, at 7 months of age, should
these meds be the cause of her spitting up? etc...

As someone with two kids who have *severe* allergies and reflux, I think
you're overreacting. Babies spit up. The more a spitty baby eats, the more
it seems they're spitting up. If Rachel is heathly and gaining weight and
the spitting up isn't causing her immense discomfort, I'd keep nursing. The
older a baby is, the more milk they ingest while they nurse, and the more it
looks like they spit up when they do spit up. Some kids just spit up.
Sometimes it's related to what you eat, but IIRC, Rachel's weight gain is
fine (unlike my 9 pound almost 6 month old). Don't stress yourself out
about the medicine.

Well, you're right about her weight gain- she's now 15 pounds at almost 7
months old- still a little small, but she's tall, and she has gained in a
perfect curve.
2 nights ago she truly vomited- the first time I have ever seen her vomit,
not spit up. She hasn't done that since. It doesn't seem like something is
wrong, but it just seems like she spits up way more than other babies I have
been around. Other people agree with me on that- she spits up the most of
MIL's grandkids....and the most of my friends' babies. (They see her spit up
and go "Whoa, does she do THAT a lot"??
So I guess, she is just a spitty baby. I remember what my midwife told me-
if she spits up a lot as a newborn and continues it, it probably won't get
better until she's up to 18 months old, it will just turn different colors
as she eats solids. Guess she was right!
It's not really been a huge problem, but this past week she spit up solids a
lot, where she wasn;t spitting up solids since we started her on them except
one time when she ate too much oatmeal. So I'll just take it for what it's
worth--- her weight gain is good, so she must be ok and just spitty. Just
wanted to mention that before I get offline.....it did worry me when she
vomited and I still don't know what that was about- that was a true,
gagging, blehhhhhhhhh vomit. She was choking on it. She has choked a little
on spitup before. But that was so different, I was afraid she was getting a
stomach bug- she appeared to be fine the next day, but didn't want to eat
much....including nursing......but then after that day she was fine.

My DDs nickname for her first year was 'chucky child' - i.e. she spat up all
the time. And I was taking no meds at all. I would do what you need to to
keep yourself feeling well (take the meds) and perhaps put up with the
consequences to Rachel, if they are indeed the cause, whcih they might not
be.

I can 100% assure you that I will not be taking Relpax ever again while
nursing! It seems that *that's* what caused her to vomit. And those types of
things are supposed to be safe, but I know I'm not touching Relpax when I
have a migraine until I wean. Or I guess I could pump first. My problem is I
have never been able to pump much at a time ....maybe 2-3 ounces. I think
the pump just can't get what Rachel can.

Jill - some babies just spit up. If you are worried about something you are
ingesting, try a food diary before you try weaning.
DD was a spitter and I can almost guarantee that H will spit up on me if I
put a clean shirt on or even look like I'm going to put him in the car
(nothing to do with the car - it just always seems to happen that he soaks
his shirt just as we try to leave the house).
DD grew out of it and I'm assuming DS will as well. If Rachel is gaining
weight and is otherwise happy, I wouldn't worry as its a fairly normal thing
for babies to do.
