breech at 31 wks

At my last OB appt. I was 31 wks along and the doc. said she couldn't tell
for sure, but *thought* what she felt at the bottom of my abdomen was little
feet so that my baby was in a breech position.  She said, nothing to worry
about at this point and that they usually flip, but of course, I'm worrying.
How can you tell by feeling my abdomen which position the baby is in?  I
mean, do little feet have some characteristic that make them feel different
than little hands for example?  And does it get easier to tell what you're
feeling as the baby gets bigger?

At what point is it too late (or is there a time that is too late) for the
baby to flip to head down position by themselves? I'm 32 wks now.

Thanks much,
Lydia

babies have been known to flip in labour, so it's never too late, though the
further along you get the less likely it is, however at 32 weeks there
really is no need to be concerned.

you can feel how the baby is lieing by first finding the back, then working
both ways to find the head and the bottom, at least that is how OBs etc do
it, for a mum its more likely that you will feel strong kicks high up if the
baby is head down, or low down if it is breech

Not entirely sure of this as I can't decifer anything by feeling my abdomen.
I'm sure it is quite obviously to care providers though.

My midwife said my baby was floating around head up at my last appointment
(30 weeks). She too said it was nothing to worry about and that she will
only start to get concerned at about 34 weeks. If the baby is still head up
at that point I am going to try acupuncture, yoga and a chiropractor. If at
37 weeks the baby is still breech they can attempt an external version.

A good friend of mine's baby didn't turn until she was 36 weeks along so I'm
certainly not worrying at this point.

It's much too early to worry about baby's presentation now!  By about 36
or so weeks it's more permenent, but at 37 weeks there's a chance for ECV.

As for feeling the position of the baby, go more by weather the great
bulk at the top of your uterus is hard (head) or not-so-hard (bum).
Hands and feet tend to feel simillar, but there are knees that stick out
as well....  Just have a play!  Do you know where your placenta is? Best
not to poke too hard around that area, and you can't define baby bits as
easily through that, anyway.

I can tell the baby is head-down by where I feel hiccups.  I feel them low
down in my pelvis, where the baby's shoulders jerk when he/she hiccups.  I
can feel them a bit up high where the bottom is, but they're much more
prevalent lower down.  Also, if I push on the bottom, it moves the legs and
the whole body, but pushing on the head just moves the head.

You've got plenty of time.  My DD was head-down at 30w, questionably breech
at 32w, and definitively breech at 34w.  She flipped back to head-down by
35w and stayed that way.  My midwives weren't concerned at 32w, and they
were only mildly concerned at 34w.  They said they don't really get too
worried until 36w, at which point they start talking about seeing if mom and
baby are good candidates for an external version (procedure by which a
trained professional turns the baby manually -- it's done pretty late so
that if something happens, the baby is full-term enough that they can
deliver the baby).

It also gives them the biggest chance of staying head down, any sooner and
they can just turn back.

It is normal to be worried.  You have plenty of time for the baby to be head
down.  I think my baby was breech or transverse (it varied) until 31-32
weeks.  A head is round and firm, a baby bottom is round and a bit softer,
and feet, well, they aren't round ;)  A trained hand can tell position.  You
will know feet when you see a small bump and when you touch it and apply a
bit of pressure they move quickly away or kick you back!

Take a breath, time is on your side for baby to switch.

Well, I have heard of babies turning as late as in labor!  But you can not
really expect to turn and have it stick before 34 weeks, and most versions
are attempted at 37 weeks.  After that it is harder.

There was a recent thread on turning a breech (last week or so).
You can find lots information at www.gentlebirth.org.
