labour question

I am 39.5 weeks. My OB checked me today at 1:30 and said I was not dilated
at all. About four hours later, I started feeling crampy, like menstrual or
bowel movement type cramps. I'm also getting lots of BH contractions. Should
I be worried? Could labour be starting even though I wasn't even dilated at
all earlier today? Could the doctor's check up have done something to make
these cramps happen? I'm just concerned and figured that this newgroup
offers honest and experienced advice.

Thanks for your input.

I don't know whether the internal exam could have any effect,
but you can certainly go into labor just hours after not
being dilated at all.  Not exactly something to worry about at
39.5 weeks though :)

Why would you be worried?  I would imagine going into labor
would be a good thing at this point ;-)

> Could labour be starting even though I wasn't even dilated at

You betcha.  That's why those internal exams aren't worth
a hill of beans.  They don't tell you a thing.  You can walk around
4+ cm dilated for weeks, or you can be hard and closed and go into
labor a half hour later.

> Could the doctor's check up have done something to make

Yep.  Sometimes an internal irritates the cervix and
causes some cramping or even spotting.  Or maybe you were
just ready to go into labor.  Or maybe you'll start who knows
how long a round of "false labor" (hope not--that's no fun).
Some less ethical caregivers have been known to strip membranes
to attempt to get things going without telling the client, but
I suspect that's unlikely if you weren't at all dilated at the
time.

Bottom line:  you could be going into labor, but it's
*way* early to tell and nothing to be concerned about either
way.  It'll either pick up and turn into active labor or not,
and there'll be plenty of time to mobilize once you know for
sure.

Best wishes,
Ericka

I always feel a bit crampy or sore for a day or so after an internal.
I hate them.

As far as if you're starting labor be happy about it, but I'd recommend
not calling it labor too fast expecially if it is a first labor because
you'll just wear yourself out.  You'll know when it really is labor.
You will not be wondering when you are in active labor, so try to get
rest for now.

Why have them then?  You can always say no.  I think I might have had 2
internals last labour -- none in the pregnancy at all.

I have not had an internal this pregnancy and I never had one with my twins
at all either, but did have a C-section with them so cannot comment on what
might have been during a labor.

I didn't have them much in my first 2 pgs; only maybe 3 checks in 2
pgs, but in this pg I keep getting sent to labor and delivery for
monitoring because of my high bps, and they just seem to routinely do
them in labor and delivery, and I haven't fought them on that issue
yet, although I have pushed back about many other things.  In my birth
plan, I have requested no cervix checks because I delivered 2 minutes
after a cervix check was 5 cm last pg, so I don't think they mean much
after that.  It only made me feel like labor was going to go on a long
time more when I was in the panicky state of transition.

The exam could have made you crampy, but it's nothing to worry about, but it
could also be the start of things, the lack of dilation isn't an indicator
at all, whatever it is, good luck!

Did your OB do an internal?  Did he strip your membranes?
Simply refuse internals, they don't really help.

Thank you all for your help. I'm still somewhat crampy today, but it has
subsided a bit. My doctor said not to worry about not being dilated at this
point. He also said that he would not recommend induction as it drastically
increases your chances of needing a a c-section. I wouldn't want to be
induced anyways. We'll check again next week to see how things are coming
along.

It's amazing how long this last week before the due date seems. I can't
imagine what each day will feel like once the due date passes. On one hand
I'm very anxious to get labour started, but on the other it feels right to
just let time do what it has to do. One thing's for sure, he can't stay in
there forever! lol

It's so nice to have people here to give me advice. Thanks again and I'll
keep you all posted.

Tina

PS: Larry... he couldn't strip my membranes as I was not at all dilated.

I'm not sure why you are concerned.  You are 39.5 weeks.  You may be
starting to dilate.  Your timing sounds fine.  The baby should be well
enough cooked to come out, and it still could be a few days or longer before
you actually go into full labor...

Congrats!

Just to be clear, I wasn't worried that labour was starting and that it
would be a problem, but that perhaps something else was wrong. Heck, I'd
have been glad to hear my doctor tell me to go check in 'cause it's time.
I'm due tomorrow, but nothing yet. My mother went over by almost three weeks
with both of her pregnancies; I really hope I don't follow in her footsteps!

I just don't get what else it could be that you are worried about.  Again,
you're 39.5 weeks and you are feeling contractions or at least, aches.  You
know the saying, "If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks
like a duck, it's probably a duck."

If it's not labor starting, it's at least your body getting in gear.  Good
luck.
