Shiny has a discoloration on her back. I would assume it was a bruise by
appearance, but it has been there since she was 2 months old (she's over 4
months now) and hasn't changed at all in the past month at least (I don't
remember if it ever looked significantly different, but it really doesn't
look different now). We have no idea how it got there.

She also has some blood vessel breakage the doc said would fade, left over
from the birth. It's kinda cute, as it makes her nose pink and is in an
interesting flare pattern over one eye. It's about the same as it was a
couple days after she was born.

And there is one spot where her head got bonked as we got in the car where
there is still a faint bruise (it was never a dark bruise, just a little
one) that hasn't changed in weeks. I would have taken her in then, but she
just wasn't all that bothered by it, just cried a little but was fine within
10-15 minutes.

She *never* had jaundice, not at all, even though she lost a lot of weight
and was a slow gainer.

It took her a LONG time to stop oozing around her bellybutton. Her cord fell
off at 3 days, but she had periodic oozes up to about 3 weeks, of dark
blood. Tiny oozes. Her cord was not cut until hours after her birth.

Anyway, I'm wondering what it all means. I got bonked by the car a week or
two ago and got a massive bruise on my shoulder, and it's already gone past
the color of hers into faded yellow.

With the chromosome thing, I'm wondering if it's connected....

FWIW: I have FVL, heterozygous. So my bruises tend to last a little longer
than average because my body takes longer to break down clotted blood,
because FVL makes the clots more durable.

I had a lightbulb go off this morning that maybe the long-lasting bruises,
lack of jaundice and umbilical cord stuff might be connected somehow.

#2 had a mark that was dark red on her bottom. It appeared when she was
about 2 months and I don't think it had faded by 6 months, but at 12 months
was defitely fading and now (21 months) I don't think there's a sign of it.
It looked like a splat of paint, with a definite edge to it, and was about
1" by 2".
The dr. thought it was a strawberry mark when it first appeared, but I think
it might have been a mongolian spot (or whatever you call it) I think they
can look more bruise like than #2's mark. They're typically down the bottom
end of the back, I think.

Sounds like a mongolian birth mark, which are usually at the base of the
spine.  Do you have any Asian in your family?  My daughter has one and my
community nurse told me what it is and that they are common in Asian people
(my daughter is a quarter Chinese).  It has faded and isn't very noticeable
now.

It's just under one shoulder blade... got her out in the sun for a little
while today though and it did look yellower like a bruise. Might just need
to get her more sun...

We are as white as they come... I'm so white I had a friend who was albino
whose skin was darker (because it was more red). My husband tans, but is
primarily descended from New England bluebloods and Scottish sheep stealers
and pirates.

It's commoner in non-whites, but not unknown in whites.
