Hi all

When would be a good time to work out my birth plan, I am now 27 wks
pregnant so is now a good time or is it too early. I never really bothered
with my last two births but am thinking about doing one with this one.

How about the hospital bag, is it too early or should I be thinking about
it!

I wrote my birth plan at 38 weeks, and I never did pack a hospital bag.

it is good to start thinking about the birth, in case you want any supplies,
or decided to attend any classes, it gives you time to research any issues
that crop up

as for the hospital bag, I found it helpful and reassuring to have an after
birth box prepared, containing items such as disposable pants, sanitary
towels, nappies, that kind of thing, it was left in the bottom of my
wardrobe, the intention was for it to be brought out after the baby was
born, but we ended up in hospital, so it was quite easy on the day of the
birth for my husband to pop it in the boot of the car. I didn't have a
hospital bag prepared and when I went into hospital, I didn't know I
wouldn't come out til I'd had the baby, once that was clear DH just brought
stuff in as I needed it.

Ok thanks Anne

I think I will start writing my plan soon and get the hospital bag ready
soon as well. Prehaps ill leave it for a few weeks until im 30wks pregnant
or something like that. I am thinking of missing the classes on labour this
time round because I remember most of the stuff about labour and thats all
they will really speak about. I think the only thing I would benefit from in
going to the classes here would be the tour of the labour unit at the
hospital because my other 2 babies were born in a different hospital. Will
have to speak to midwife about this one!!!!!!

I don't think there is a problem with doing it early.  It would give you
time to think about it and make changes.  Do it whenever you feel like it.

I think that if you feel like writing your birth plan, anytime is fine. It
would make sense to me to go ahead and write it now and then check in with
it again when you're around 30-34 weeks and see if you want to change
anything.

I think I packed my hospital bag the second time when I was around 35 weeks.
Even that's a bit early, but the first time, I was two weeks early (and had
the bag only half-packed), and the second time, I lived an hour away from
the hospital, so I was a bit paranoid. This time, I'll be much closer to the
hospital, so I figure I'll try to have everything I want to take to the
hospital organized by the time I'm 37 weeks or so.

But you know, if you're just in the mood to do it, there's really no reason
*not* to.

Oh, dear, I was so bad about packing a hospital bag!  It was one day before
my due date when I set my stuff out to put into the bag, and I went into
labor the next day.  My bag was still unpacked.  Luckily, it was all there,
but it was still a pain for my husband to have to dump it into the bag as we
rushed out of the house with a two hour drive to the hospital...  LOL  So,
lesson learned, don't wait till 40 weeks to pack the bag. :)

I didn't pack one ahead of time, as I recall. I threw my toothbrush,
Lanisoh, a book, and a change of clothes into a bag before we went to
the hospital. I can't think of anything else I'd've wanted that I didn't
have. I wore hospital gowns while I was there -- let them do the laundry!

I was in the hospital for two days, during which my husband went home
and brought back my coat (I had worn a raincoat) and the carseat.

I didn't have a birth plan, either, but by the time I got to the
hospital I already knew that I wanted an epidural, so pain management
wasn't something I needed to discuss further.

My circumstances were a bit different than a normal hospital stay, so I
really should have packed the bag a bit beforehand.  I never packed hospital
bags for my second and third births, though.  If I had needed to go to the
hospital (they were homebirths), I would have done as you did!

Lol... we didn't even have a carseat until the day before Grant came home.
My mom went and bought it for us, and it worked very well, fortunately. :)

I didn't get around to finishing my birth plan.  It would have been moot
anyway, though, since things went so fast.

In general, I think it's wise to have a backup plan.
There are lots of reasons why an epidural can be unavailable,
for part or even all of your labor.  The anesthesiologist(s)
can be busy with others. You might have significant pain
before you get to the point where an epidural is advisable
(the earlier the epidural, the more likely several complications
are).  You might have a contraindication for an epidural.
You might get an epidural and find it partially or completely
ineffective.  It never hurts to have a "plan B" in your
bag of tricks.

Ericka

Well, I've been in preterm labor for 3 weeks, and still haven't packed my
bag...  I'm 2cm dilated, partly effaced, etc.  But I'm thinking I'd better
get with it!  I'm 35 weeks now.  I don't even know what a birth plan really
is.  Something else I'd better figure out!

Hi Betsy

Its basically just a list ect you take to hospital with you which tells the
staff your wishes such as who you want as your labour partner and if that
person stays all the way through or not ect blar blar. What type of pain
reliefe you are open to and what you defently dont want, what postions you
want to adopt for labour ect,if you prefur not to have stoodents present or
if you are OK with them there. So its basically like a little labour will if
you know what I mean. I think its there so that you dont have to worry about
telling the staff everything on the day but its not a thing you have to
have. I didnt have them there with my last two babies but I would like one
in place this time round. One thing that is going down on my plan is that
should I HAVE to have another C section then fine but I do not want to know
the details of whats happening, just get on and do it and let me know when
its all over and done with. This is because I am really thing with
operations and if they tell me when they are cutting me open and pulling the
baby out then I am likely to faint, I feel all dizzy just writing about it.
Hopefully baby will be like #2 and come as a VBAC again but we just never
know!!!!

I would certainly do it now if I were going to do one.
I think the main point of a birth plan is to serve as a set
of talking points between you and your caregiver.  If those
discussions should result in your realizing that your caregiver
isn't on the same wavelength you are, it's nice to know in
time to do something about it.

> How about the hospital bag, is it too early or should I be thinking about

That you probably don't need to stress over yet,
though I suppose it doesn't harm anything to think about
it.

Best wishes,
Ericka
