Hi everyone,

Little John has had a rough week. Hes had a fever the last few days of
no more that 102.5. He had all the classic cold symptoms as well as a
rash on both cheeks. We treated him with the typical otc infant stuff
to keep the fever in check and now his fever is gone. Heres the thing
though, he is having trouble with foods and keeping it down. This
started mildly a few days ago, 5 days maybe but didnt seem that bad.
Today he has thrown up 3 times including a major projectile vomit. He
seems ok, he mood is good and he seems really hungry but he cant hold
anything down. We tried allimentum mixed with cereal which he gets
everyday and he immediatly starting hurling, not alot but you can tell
he just had a tough time with it. Hes drinking pedialite though, that
stays down fine.

We though he might have fifths disease because of the cheeks, they
looked slapped. he has no diahrrea or anything else like that. He looks
to have alot of mucus in his vomit, its gooey and nasty. He just got
over twin ear infections just 2 weeks ago, we arent sure what to make
of this becase the fever is gone.

Any ideas?

Fifths disease should be a rash which can be anywhere on the body, but
particularly on the face. If he's teething it can give a rash on the cheeks
similar to fifths. My doctor told me that the thing to look with fifths is a
clear (looks white) area of skin round the mouth.
The rash looks like an allergy rash. Lots of red circularish spots, pretty
flatish (ie. can't really feel them) which increase in quantity until the
area is just red. My pair had them all over their limbs as well as the face.
Looked a bit like sunburn but wasn't hot to the touch.

I havn't heard of children vomiting with fifths either, although that can be
something else. Some children vomit with high temperatures.

DD gets bright red cheeks from ear infections.  Is it possible he isn't
over his earlier infections or has gotten new ones?

When it comes to repeated vomiting, I'd take a kid to the doctor.
Chances are, he's absolutely fine, but as there's some scary illnesses
out there that have red cheeks and vomiting, it'd be worth it to me for
peace of mind alone.

I took him to the doctor today who dismissed Fifths. He said is must
have been a virus. He started to keep stuff down today and he was his
old fired up self today. He hadnt been that way in weeks.

It was nice to have to chase him around endlessly again.

Oh, I'm glad to hear nothing serious was wrong and that he's doing
better.  DD was sick for most of November, and it's so upsetting and
scary when they just aren't themselves.
