Hello,

I'm currently 7 months into my first pregnancy and have been
experiencing pelvic joint pain for about a month now.  I have the
standard symptoms, such as pain when changing positions in bed, pain
when walking, going up stairs, putting on pants (standing on one leg),
etc ...
What i am wondering is ... how many women out there have had similar
pain and have been helped by going to a chiropractor?
I'm considering going to see a chiropractor, but will it help alot, a
little, or not at all?
Also, if anyone can recommend a good chiropractor specializing in
adjusting pregnant women in Massachusetts, i'd really appreciate it.  I
have no idea where to begin looking.

Thanks,
Jennifer

I also had this but I never saw a chiropractor, sorry!  I did find that
using an exercise ball to sit on and bounce on helped pop things back in to
place temporarily.

Jennifer, I am a DC in practice 25 years. I see this all the time.
Myself and our team of PTs can usually help. Also, our State
Chiropractic Society has a referral system. Email me privately, as I do
not want to post my URL on the newsgroup.

I had the problem by my third pregnancy, and my midwife sent me to a
chiropractor with a specialty in treating pregnant women for this kind
of problem - he had a great reputation, and the midwife swore tons of
her patients had been helped by the guy. I'd never been to a
chiropractor before, but I was in a lot of pain so I figured, what the
heck. He spent a lot of time with me, poked and prodded, gave me a shoe
insert for one heel, and did only lord knows what to my lower back and
hips. My rear end was bruised and sore for days. Whatever he did made
it much worse, not better, and that was that. I refused to go back
there.

The real cure for the problem is having the baby and tincture of time,
so your ligaments tighten up again.

My personal take on chiropracty is that its like a religious thing. You
either believe in it or not, and I'm in the NOT camp. I have a
biological science degree, and have always had a real interest in all
things medical so I'm relatively well informed and know the
terminology, and I could certainly tell he was spinning me scientific
hooey while I was in his office. I have no doubt that some people are
helped by it, but I wonder how much of that is because they believe it
will help them - same reason that lots of alternative treatments work.
The power of belief.

If you had never been to a Chiro before, that is probobly why you wer
sore and felt MORE sore after the adjustment.  It takes a lot of wor
to get things back into place and sometimes several visits befor
things start feeling better.

My Aunt is a Chiropractor and has been for 27yrs, there are some thing
she helps me with (I've been having adjustments since childhood) an
some things she cant.  She's really good with my mid/upper back an
neck, but can't help with my hips and pelvis.   Perhaps the Chiro yo
saw was the same way.

and I agree on the power of belie

M, if you were spinned, you saw the wrong DC. There are perhaps more
good double blind studies on spinal manipulation vs sham than many if
not most other therapies, many well referenced journals.
I tell patients not to go with ANY Dr. they dont trust.
Unfortunately, we still have some in our ranks who emphasize philosophy
,and dont address the real underlying  science.
BTW, significant discomfort, especially in pregnancy is rare, and
virtually avoidable with certain techniques.

Mary,

Thanks for sharing your experience.  I have also never been to a
chiropractor before ... and I'm not too sure that i'm interested in
feeling worse before feeling better.

Hi there,

I haven't been to a chiropractor yet, but I'm having the same sort of
pain you describe.  At my last midwife appointment, she suggested 4
things:
1) If you find something that exaggerates the pain, try to avoid it (I
sit in one position and then the pain is worse when I stand up)
2) She said pelvic tilts may help.
3) Massage (haven't tried it yet, but I'm not sure if it would
generally work since when I push where the pain is I can't touch it
still)
4) Chiropractor (she said she had the same pain and was going to the
chiropractor every 3 weeks when she was pregnant).

I may have to try the birth/yoga ball and see if that helps too.
