tampons and m/c

cara - 29 Dec 2005 21:18 GMT I had a m/c over the weekend and am still bleeding. We have friends in town, my kids are out of school for the holiday break, and we had lots of fun plans to go to the pool, beach, camping, etc. I've read that tampons should be avoided following m/c - how strictly should this advise be adhered to? I would love to get out and about and distract myself with the fun plans we had rather than sit around waiting to stop bleeding, but obviously our plans center around swimming and sand. Not a good combo wearing a pad....would love someone to tell me its ok to wear a tampon for a few hours here and there :)....any comments?

Me Myself and I - 29 Dec 2005 22:33 GMT I would certainly say no and stick to the pads. You can't be sure at this stage if all tissue and clots have been passed. Also you do not want to risk toxic shock. How about having a few quiet days at home to recover?
Take care.

If you were less than 6-7 weeks, and have already done most of your heavy bleeding, I wouldn't worry about it.

I was a little over 8 weeks.....seems like things are calming down as of today (no clots, lighter bleeding etc), so maybe tomorrow I'll feel more confident in doing more playing.

Jamie Clark - 29 Dec 2005 23:20 GMT Did the baby ever develop a heartbeat that you know of? I think before the have a heartbeat, they are pretty small, and if you've already done most of your heavy bleeding, then you're likely okay. I've had 5-6 chemical pregnancies, where the fetus never developed a heartbeat, and I always just wore a tampon. If you feel like you are dealing with light bleeding or spotting, you'd probably be okay. Just bring lots of tampons and change regularly, and perhaps when you are done playing in the water and wearing a swimsuit, you can go back to a pad.

Don't know if there was a heartbeat - my 9 wk u/s was scheduled for today, however, the timing of the conception (wasn't planned, and was a huge surprise seeing that we've used the same birth control methods successfully for 10+ years) was really odd, so I'm guessing that things didn't develop correctly from early on. That and I had no symptoms at all from the beginning aside from + hpt. Mix of emotions for sure.

I'd avoid tampons for risk of infection and toxic shock.
