Anne Rogers - 27 Jan 2006 18:02 GMT just been listening to BBC radio 4
there was a report about siamese twins born in iraq 2 days ago and said they were boy and girl, thinking this was rather odd, I went into the bbc website, but cannot find any reference to the story, so I googled it, still nothing, it's not April 1st, so what on earth is going on!

Jamie Clark - 27 Jan 2006 18:11 GMT I haven't heard anything about it. I did a Google search on "Siamese twins Iraq" and "conjoined twins Iraq" and didn't find anything recent from any sources.
Maybe you misheard, or maybe it was a "late breaking" story that they broadcast and then realized it was wrong, so pulled it. Who knows.

Who knows. definitely didn't mishear, wasn't really listening at first, but at the headline I stopped what I was doing, they had a reporter in the hospital in Baghdad, interviews with the parents and later in the report they repeated "boy and girl". They are joined above the hip, sharing 3 kidneys and ones legs are not fully formed. It was right at the end of the show, 17.50 (i.e. less than half an hour ago) I think I will go and find it on "listen again"

Is it this? This seems to be the most recently born conjoined twins, but I can't tell the gender from the names, "Hafsa" and "Ilham". They were born 50 days ago in Morroco, but will be separated in Saudi Arabia. Okay, checking another article, it appears that they are both girls. http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1§ion=0&article=75696&d=3&m=1&y=2006
I'm guessing this isn't it. Now you've me curious. Please provide the link once you find it, okay?

"In Baghdad, the parents of a boy and girl born joined together at the hip have issued an appeal for help. The twins need to be separated, but there are no facilities for the operation in Iraq. Jonny Dymond reports from Baghdad. "
from the BBC website, it's a video feed

Jamie Clark - 27 Jan 2006 22:32 GMT Very bizarre. I thought that usually, only same sex children would be conjoined as it was a single egg that split, although not very well. But, I also think I remember hearing that sometimes non-identical twins can be conjoined as well, as they sort of fuse together during the early development, and it can affect the development as well, which it clearly did in the case of these boy/girl twins in Iraq. Hopefully they will be able to be brought to America, or somewhere else, where they can have access to better medical care and be separated.

My other thought was some sort of deformity that makes them think one is a boy (or the other way round), when in fact they are both of the same sex, but I guess that will be cleared up as news comes out.

Elle - 28 Jan 2006 00:34 GMT > finally > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > from the BBC website, it's a video feed That is very bizarre, I've never heard of opposite sex cojoined twins. Must be very rare. The Hospital for Sick Children here in Toronto recently separated a set of cojoined twins from Zimbabwe. It happened that a Canadian doctor was doing a stint in a hospital there when it was discovered (very late in the pregnancy) that the boys were joined at the torso. I think they shared a liver. Anyway she delivered them via c-section and then spear-headed a campaign to raise the funds from a variety of sources and the doctors here donated their time to separate the twins when they were nearly a year old. They also had quite severe cleft lips and palates that were repaired. It was a very long process, apparently now they are nearly 2 and doing well although somewhat malnourished and underweight but of course everyone wonders what will happen to these boys as they grow up in their very poor rural village.
