Possible problems with a possible pregnancy?

Kitty - 24 Feb 2006 12:55 GMT One question. If you suspect you´re pregnant but you are probably NOT and therefore have put in a new NuvaRing, ( if you are....) how would that affect a pregnancy? Any ideas if that would be super duper bad or just bad or a little bad? I just went to my doctor today to get an appointment for a pregnancy test and he looked at me real weird when I told him I´d put another ring in today because even though I suspect I am pregnant, the probabilities are nil.
He told me that was not good and then I asked my doctor if I should take the ring out and he said¨" No, now that you have it in, don´t take it out." He asked me when was my last REAL period and I said January 23rd (a Monday). He said based on my last period that if I am pregnant than I would be three weeks. He also said that if I continue to have symptoms till next Tuesday morning when I go to give my urine to the doctor, that he´d do a blood test. I frankly would feel much better if he would just go ahead and do the blood test but he said that the urine test should be pretty valid.
Is it true you have to wait at least a week after a missed period to test for pregnancy? I tested this morning, first pee, everything correct( at least I think) and it came out negative but it hasn´t even been a week yet and from many of the comments I´ve read..... Many women don´t even test till a week after their first missed period. When shoud I really test? I used the pregnancy test Predictor this morning. Is three weeks of pregnancy too early? I did mention to my family doctor that in my last real period I put my ring in late and also in the one previous to my last period. So my last period was January 23rd and I put my ring in January 27th really late like...mmm...18 hours late. The same day, well Saturday 1am instead of 7am Friday The ring before January 27th I put in four hours late on December 30th.
I know my dates real well because NuvaRing comes with stickers you put in your agenda. How many people have tested negative when still having symptoms? I´ve had the breast thing and also gone to the bathroom ( to pee) at least four times a day. Plus some problems with digesting food, some nausea and my fingers are kind of swollen at times. They swell up and I never have swollen fingers even before a period. I just can´t stop thinking about the way the doctor looked at me when I said I put a new ring in.
Amy W. - 24 Feb 2006 17:07 GMT Assuming you have an average 28 day cycle, if your last period was on January 23rd, you would have been most fertile between February 4-8th. If you had unprotected sex anytime between the 2nd and the 9th there's a chance you might be pregnant.
Depending on what type of test you are using, and how well you are following the directions, it still might be too early to get any traces of the pregnancy hormone in your urine. I'm sure your doctor would be happy to send you for a blood beta test, which is pretty much the most accurate test available.
There are no false posetives, only false negatives.
I don't know anything about this NuvaRing, but if I am correct to assume it is a form of birth control, I can probably also assume that it is designed to control your hormones, and may mess up any readings you're looking for from pregnancy tests. Not to sound like a broken record, but I certainly recommend a blood test. Better to find out sooner than later so you can start making plans!
It wouldn't hurt to start taking some prenatal vitamins too, especially if there's any chance that you might want to keep a baby if you are preganant, or get pregnant in the near future. My doctor told me to start taking them 10 weeks before trying to conceive, if that gives you any indication of how important getting the right vitamins can be.
Keep in touch Kitty, and let us know how everything turns out.
Amy.

Hormonal birth control methods do not mess up home pregnancy tests.

Kitty - 25 Feb 2006 08:09 GMT I took out the ring. My husband was least to say...."dangeriously quiet" and sullen when I told him that is what the doctor had told me to do. But I honestly felt much better when I took the ring out because at least in any case, pregnant or not, I´ll not feel guilt. I was really feeling guilty and my husband was like " No, no, keep it because you´re probably not and well..." . The truth is, it never occurred to me to use condoms so we´ll just use old fashioned condoms. We are so used to using the ring that the idea of taking it out, especially for him, was a little traumatic. I think he is afraid that I am not pregnant and that I will get pregnant now that I have taken the ring out.
It´s not like he doesn´t want children, he does. But I think he would want to think about it first, then go for it. It´s just...he is not the type of person to process things fast, he takes his time. I am definately more of a decision maker than he is. Anyway, I told him the doctor told me to take it out and frankly I do not regret it. I do not feel guilty now. One question, my doctor told me that the urine test detects 50ml of HCG, do you think that is too little? I mean, I´ve heard of home pregnancy tests that detect 25ml and 50ml for a urine test from the doc seems kind of...primitive considering that there are tests out there that you do at home and they detect 25ml at least.

I had my aniversary party on Febuary 4th and it was a "complete" celebration. Even before I took rings and pills, I had a regular period. It was only off by a few days every month, but it always came at the...oh I do not remember now. It´s been too long to remember when it came. I do remember though that it always came on time, minus or plus a few days. I just calculated in my agenda three weeks, which in the fourth week my period "should" come. So I am off my ring and I am going to wait to see if my period comes a second time because the last time my period did not...come. I had one day of light bleeding and that was all she wrote. I mean I suppose my period should come in the fourth week just like with the ring but now that I am not wearing anything...I frankly really have no idea if my period will come just like with the ring, every three weeks or if my body will go crazy and lord knows what because I no longer have anything controling my period.
What usually happens when you go off pills/rings with the body? Does it go crazy or does it....stay the same for a little while and than change back to the way it was before you started to take harmone birth control? The ring is a very low dosage harmonal birth control. It is topical and only goes to the reproductive system, it does not enter the blood stream. It´s like a cream you put on your hand, it goes on your hand and only your hand absorbs it. As far as I know, it is the lowest possible because I was having trouble with the pills and I decided to go off the pills. My gyno told me that before I do that, I should try the ring so she gave me a free sample, I tried it and I liked it. Still, even with a low dosage ring....I still have some emotional ups and downs sometimes and yesterday when I had put it in, I noticed I was starting to have some type of mental cloud coming over me. When I took the ring out, it went away and I was my happy self again.
I am seriously thinking about just going off all types of harmone birth control. They mess with your brain too much, not to mention OTHER important things too. So if I have a 28 day cycle, then my fertile period is after my period and two weeks before my next period?
Amy W. - 26 Feb 2006 23:24 GMT I got a home pregnancy test online that can detect 20... at earlypregnancytest.com
if you're still interested.
I am in no way affiliated with that site, other than having been a customer once. It was WAY cheaper than drug store tests, which I was afraid I was going to break the bank buying while we were trying to conceive.
Amy.

Kitty - 28 Feb 2006 12:01 GMT I am definately still interested. I think now my husband actually likes the idea of not being on any harmonal birth control. In fact, he was actually going to suggest it and I didn´t even know it. I think it was the shock of the idea that I had taken it out without him knowing it at first that made him get sullen a little while. But really, he is quite happy I did that, he doesn´t mind using a condom and neither do I so actually this is even better. No side effects at all. Whoopee! I just had a urine and blood test today so we´ll see what happens in a week. My doc asked me a weird question. He asked me if my regular period had come and I thought that...well that time had already passed and that it wasn´t going to come till at least three weeks later. Apparently he must have thought that if I take the ring out, my regular period might come back. I was under the impression it was gone for at least till the "next" time. He told some me some interesting things. he said the blood test and urine test are not measured the same way, they basically look for the same thing but at different measurements.
