My daughter's principal just phoned me this morning.  He apparently called
right after school on Monday while I was still at work, and forgot to call
me last night.

My daughter is 10 years old, and in grade 4.   There have been quite a few
"incidents" over the past year between her & another girl in her class --
verbal insults, slaps, kicks, etc. Mostly coming from this other girl
towards my daughter.  I've advised her many times to just stay away from
her, keep her distance, ignore her, etc.

Well, apparently it escalated quite a bit on Monday right after school
ended.  My daughter was quietly getting her stuff from her locker & leaving
school to come home when this other girl called her name.  She looked over,
and the kid said "ha ha, there are no teachers around", PULLED A KNIFE at my
daughter and said "you're gonna die soon!"

Like, OMG!   This kid is 9 or 10 years old!!!!!   My daughter immediately
went to a teacher, and the result is the other kid has been suspended from
school for a minimum of 20 days, police were called, and she has to undergo
a psychiatric evaluation to "make sure she isn't a danger to herself or
others", and possibly undergo treatment, which *may* keep her out of my
daughter's school for upwards of a full year.

When I relayed the part about the 20 day (or more) suspension to my
daughter, she was like "YES! I don't have to be afraid at school any more!"

I'm just absolutely REELING from this.   These days, you expect stuff like
this to happen in highschool, NOT in junior grades!

(Just needed to vent a bit)

Middle school is where it starts, that's for sure.
The police know that this girl has threatened your child's life, right?
Does the hoodlum know where you live? Where your daughter plays? Her
route to and from school? Who is going to keep that girl off the school
bus?

Suspension gives kids plenty of time to think of ways to torture other
students. It makes them angrier. What assurance do you have that your
daughter will be safe from retaliation by that girl's friends? Family?
How will you know when that girl is allowed back into the school? Will
they call you beforehand or that day?

Time to make phone calls to everyone on your daughter's behalf. Police
too if necessary.

Pulling a weapon in a school around here would mean permanent expulsion.
20 days is not nearly enough.

I think it should depend on the age of the child. If the child is 8 or
older, he or she should be put into a "special" school with appropriate
mental health services and metal detectors. I don't think that leaving a
child in the environment that raised him to think that bringing a weapon
to school is doing society any good. We can correct behavioral problems
in younger children. It takes time with older kids.

No matter how good the schools are, sometimes these things happen - my 14
year old was punched in the face 6-1/2 months ago, sustaining a moderate to
severe concussion, 3 loose adult teeth (she's never had a cavity), and the
associated post-traumatic stress issues.

All we can do is teach our kids to not engage, and to go to a trusted
adult - like your daughter did.

Glad she wasn't hurt!

I've told my son he is never allowed to start fights, but he is allowed
to finish them. A knife and death threat is something else though. I
would press them to expel the girl for good and have her evaluated
somewhere. if they didnt, i would put your girl in another school, but
not before calling local media and making big deal about why she is
only suspended 20 days for pulling a knife. people are absolutely nuts,
i swear.
