Just out of curiosity, are you new to Usenet?

She doesn't know she's on Usenet.  She's coming through
talkaboutparenting.com (if I remember correctly), one of those
webboards that makes you register and ostentatiously hides your email
address and makes you think they're really giving you something when
all they're doing is archiving Usenet.  (This is not Hanah's fault, by
the way; I strongly fault these web boards that try to fool people
into thinking they're getting something unique.)

Just to think I used to worry about things like that.
Used to worry 'bout rich and skinny
'til I wound up poor and fat.

I wonder if these people know that everything they say is archived
and found through google with a simple keyword search?   I doubt it.

Particularly that their email addresses are out there and harvestable.

Like I said though, I think that's the fault of the web board, not the
people who use it.

I've found posts of mine archived in the **strangest** places.

No, I also don't fault the users.  I certainly think what talk about
parenting and others like them are taking advantage of the lack of
knowledge about the internet and how it works.  When I first got
online I posted in a website about some *very* personal things
(read- 'female problems' here) using my real name not even thinking.

Until this issue came up, I actually didn'tworry about it too much.
When posters from this website started showing up in this group and
a few others that I post to, I became quite concerned.  I was able
to check and thankfully it's not a screen for Usenet and privacy has
been confirmed.

I don't know what all of this means. Talk about parenting is doing something
crappy to people how?
Wanda

P.S.
Should someone answer her question or will she get to see replies?

Talkaboutparenting is a website.  People go there and register and
the people think they are conversing on a 'board' with other people
who have also registered in that board.

From what I recall the last time this issue came up is that
talkaboutparenting is just one of many of the 'boards' they offer.
I've seen people on ASD and ASM that post from 'talkaboutsupport'
groups as well.  And the biggest problem I see is that because
they've registered they believe they are only talking to people that
also register.

IIR, from the last time this discussing came up, it doesn't appear
that this website isn't telling these people that they are posting
to Usenet, which is public and open to anyone in the world, without
need of registering and that google will archive anything they say,
forever.

Judging from the reply from my aggravated post, they're seeing it
;-)

They make you register.  (Many of these web boards sell their address
files to spammers.)  They carry advertising.  They provide no content
at all, all they do is archive Usenet posts (which are free and do not
require registration and do not come with advertising) but they don't
tell you that.  They make you think that they're actually performing
a service.  They're not.  It's as if I took your town's phonebook,
which you ordinarily get free from the phone company, put my own ads
on it, made you sign up with me so that I could sell your address and
then tried to tell you that I had this great service for you.  If you
didn't know that you could get a free phonebook without advertising
you might think it's a good deal.  But it's not.

Here's there heading:

"Welcome to Talk About Parenting. Sit back, relax we are here to help
you find the answers about kids, homework, adoption, child support,
pregnancy, family vacations and more. We have a comprehensive bulletin
board style discussion going on now. Feel free to join in."

*WE* have a comprehensive bulletin board style discussion going on
now?  Who's this "we"?  They're not doing anything except putting a
front end on Usenet.

>Should someone answer her question or will she get to see replies?

??? Huh?  People have been replying to her all day and she's been
replying to the replies.

There were quite a few, but not in this particular thread.  She
started a few threads today and also added to the newbie thread with
her own newbie info.

But she has posted a few times since she said she wasn't, and there
have been replies to her since that time as well.

I know I pissed her off, but then- her attitude pissed me off so I
guess it's a wash.  It happens.

Something must be going on with the posts I'm seeing, or rather not seeing.
