OK, what's the secret, how do you get rid of them?
Clair Pepper - 03 Jan 2006 22:19 GMT
Unfortunatly I have become quite accustomed to getting rid of these pests!!
There are many different ways of ridding them
1)Use a fine tooth nit comb and normal hair conditioner and just comb
through to remove all the crawlers, once all the crawlers are gone no more
eggs can be laid and within a week or so you will be nit free
2)An over the counter nit remedy such as full marks.  These can be very
expensive and in my opinion do not always work.  The other downside is that
they cant be used very often or head lice become immune to the formula.
3)My mum swears by vinegar.  Two caps full of vinegar in a jug of clean
water on the last rinse of your hair.  She always did this on us and we
NEVER had nits!

Good Luck!!

You see, I don't understand how just removing the crawlers can get rid of
the nits.  Surely if there are eggs, they will hatch and the whole cycle
will start again?  Also, how do you know you've got rid of the crawlers?
They don't come with numbers on them!

put loads of conditioner on the hair and esp the roots and the back of the
neck hair line  the bone comb (nit comb) will get the eggs

No secret, and no sure fire remedy except daily combing. I hate these
blessed things.
Comb with a metal nit comb, wiping it on a clean tissue between each swipe.
Metal because the plastic ones can get damaged so the gaps between tines get
larger - it doesn't take much to let a louse through.
One tip that helped me when we were having trouble de-bugging. If you can,
let the hair get really greasy, if necessary pour on some cooking oil - we
didn't wash from Sunday, then poured on the oil on Friday after school, left
it in till Monday morning. Keep combing. Leave the hair greasy for several
days, combing every day. I'm not sure how this helped, except it was really
easy to keep the hair separated into sections, no knots, very easy to comb
and to see what was on the scalp. It may have a slightly suffocating effect
on the bugs, but I'm not sure about that. It worked though, after several
months of daily combing and banging our heads against a wall.

Keep combing and using the lotions as per the packets.

Personally, I never found the First Marks mousse any good and a friend who
used a lotion that only needed to be left on for a short while reported bad
results.

I always use one that you have to leave on for 12 hours. Derbac is my lotion
of choice.
It can happen that the lice develope immunity to a lotion so if one doesn't
work, go back to the pharmacy, tell them which you used and they can give
one with a different active ingredient. Different lotions have different
active ingrediant so sometimes the first one doesn't work.

Also, combing sometimes need to supplemented with finger picking out. DD has
very fine hair and even with a metal comb it can pass over an egg and not
remove it. Bright light, hair clips and bobbles to hold the hair in sections
and a cartoon to keep the small person still.

people say  nits can be immune to the lotion etc  but  i would worry  if my
child kept gettin nits at school, this is up to the school to stop this  ie
have mor medicals with the kids  ( i mean checkin the kids heads)

this is why i think that full marks works well coz my child has had it twice
in 2 years and i swear by this stuff

I've used Full Marks lotion, and it does seem to work.  However, it doesn't
seem to contain any insecticide, so I wonder if it's just the combing that
works, rather than the (expensive) lotion.

And ... ?

Trouble is, I bought another expensive con, known as Nice'n'Clear, which is
the equivalent of "piling loads of conditioner on", and dutifully piled and
combed, as recommended on the packaging, on days 1, 3, 7 10 and 14.  No joy.
But one application of Full Marks seemed to do it.  Can *anyone* tell me
what the magic ingredient in Full Marks is?  And if it really is just a case
of conditioner and combing, why didn't Nice'n'Clear work?

Hmmm ... large dollop of scepticism ...

I found that web page while trying to find out what it was in the
"Nice'n'Clear" that I had bought that was purportedly so effective.  But all
I got was stuff about how the insecticide-based ones caused leukeamia (sic)
and caused scaring (sic).  Scientific evidence please?  The thing that
causes scaring is web-sites like this one.

My neighbour always swears by tea tree oil.  Does the tea tree oil
combing bit, and once the little critters have been eradicated, wash
with a tea tree oil shampoo & conditioner, and they stay away.

Good luck!

Where do I get a tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner?  Now that you mention
it, I have heard that TTO is a deterrent.

IIRC, Body Shop does a tea tree oil range.

Thanks.  I will check it out next time I go past.

FWIW, the Full Marks 10-minute lotion seems to have done the trick ... at
least, this time ...  :-/
