Me again

Morgan got a spot / bite on his back on Wednesday that had turned into a
blister by Friday morning.

I spoke ( on the phone) to my doctor who recommmended that I put a plaster
on it to keep infection out and then if it got worse then he would see him
in the surgery after the weekend.

Anyway today the blister has quadrupled in size and is very sore and "open".
( Bigger than a 2p piece in diameter)

Firstly has anyone else seen anything like this before?
We wonder what caused it - and could it be an after effect of the MMR jab he
had a week prior to the spot coming up?

It isn't at the site of the vaccincation as it is just at the bottom of his
ribs on his back.

Off to hassle doctor tomorrow....

Sounds like a skin infection - might have originally been a bite & then
got infected.  Can't see any possible connection to the MMR.  These
types of infections are usually caused by a germ that commonly lives on
the skin & that sometimes causes infections in children (if you're
interested, the usual germ is Staph. aureus, & the infection itself is
called impetigo).

Antibiotic cream applied directly to the infection will generally clear
it up, & is worth trying before resorting to oral antibiotics, as oral
antibiotics are more likely to cause side-effects & resistances.  I'd
start treating something like this with Fucidin cream, & if that didn't
work try Mupirocin cream.  If still no luck then I'd go to an oral
antibiotic called flucloxacillin (though this is a type of penicillin &
not recommended if he's penicillin-allergic).  All of these are
prescription-only, BTW, so you're right to go to your doctor - just
letting you know what he might give.

Oh, & impetigo often develops a sort of yellowish crust.  Quite normal,
but make sure to soak it off (try a warm wet flannel) before putting the
cream on each time, so that the cream can actually get to the skin.  And
use a separate towel & flannel for Morgan, 'cos this is quite
infectious.

All the best,

Sarah

HI Sarah

Thanks for your informative reply. I suprisingly got an appt this morning
and the infection has spread even more now ( about 3in square and like a big
open blister - very sore.

He said it was an infection but not sure what caused it. Given him the
penicillin you mentioned flucloxacillin - and recommended lots of calpol and
ibuprofen and the nurse dressed it - got to go back tomorrow to be checked
out and redressed again.

Poor kid he was awake lots in the night in real pain but there wasn't much
we could do.

Hopefully the medicine will help to clear it now

Thanks again

Natalie
