I guess he means, you seek understanding in this or that area but how
do you know if the area you are investigating is worthwhile to
investigate? In other words, by which measure of something do you
establish it valuable and a worthy direction in which to set your
course?

This is the epic tale so long played. The terms laid out seem to offer
some understanding as to the nature of the quest and a reference for a
just course.
